Tramway and Housing
Ugadaga Head, HD Dutch Harbor
Home  |  Dutch Harbor

To support HDOP 1 and the searchlights located on Ugadaga Head, the Coast Artillery constructed a small group of buildings nearby. These structures included a mess hall, latrine, barracks, a small power plant and a tramway to the shore line, some 200 feet below. Little remains of the support buildings, but the hoist for the tramway is still in place at the top of the track.

This is a general overview, looking south at the hoist area. You can see the power plant sites cut into the hill side, the HDOP at the top of the little hill with the hoist nearby. The barracks site is near the middle, right under the lowest point in the ridge. Note the old path leading off to the mess hall, it runs across at hill on the right.
