The power plant is located on the west side of the center corridor and consists of the power room, water cooler room and the muffler gallery. The power room would have held three 125 KVA diesel generators and associated equipment. The water cooler room housed the radiators used to cool the generators. The muffler gallery contained exhaust pipes and mufflers for the power room equipment.
The power plant at Battery Const. #294 is interesting in that the wooden cribbing used to install (and later remove) the generators is still in place, along with much of the original wiring and other fixtures. Also of note is the fact that the generator nearest the door was probably not installed before construction was halted. This is indicated by the incomplete footings and unfinished conduit trench. Another unusual feature of the power plant are temporary cable trench covers made from two-by-fours and plywood. There are several such covers still intact in the power and water cooler rooms. |
