Housing and Support Buildings
Castle Bluff, Long Island, HD Kodiak
Home  |  Kodiak

The housing and support area at Castle Bluff is probably the best preserved Coast Artillery cantonment site surviving in Alaska. Many of the buildings remain, not only locatable but standing and clear of undergrowth. The Army installed more than forty structures here, including thirty-six Quonset huts, wood-frame latrine and mess hall buildings and other structures. About half of the Quonsets are still standing, while all but two wood-frame buildings have totally collapsed.

Due to heavy rain some photos are rather poor.

This Quonset (located just north of the SCR radar site, near the 110-foot contour line label on this 1944 map) is typical of the intact Quonset huts in the area.

Shower and Latrine Quonsets
In addition to the main latrine building, several Quonset huts were used as shower and latrine buildings. These photos show the most intact structure, located just north of the main latrine building (the larger of two unmarked buildings on this 1944 map).
