The Coast Artillery installed the Battery Command station for Battery Const. #296 at the top of a 60-foot wooden tower, some 400 feet southwest of the battery. Although damaged during tower's collapse, the surviving single-room station is a good example of the tower-type installations in Kodiak.

The door opening mechanism used a counterweight system: A cord attached to the door's outer edge passed through the gray pulley (on the left) and connected to a counterweight hanging in the slot below. Note also the ladder leading up to the roof in the background.
