Incomplete 155-mm Battery
Pillar Mountain, HD Kodiak
Home  |  Kodiak

Pillar Mountain is the site of three incomplete Panama type mounts, intended for use by 155-mm field guns. The middle emplacement has part of the outer ring installed, while the other two consist only of the center hub. A fourth mount would be typical of this type of battery, but could not be located in 2005. It may have been destroyed, or simply not constructed.

At more than 1200 feet above sea level, this is certainly one of the highest battery sites installed by the US. Coast Artillery.
