The Coast Artillery installed Searchlight #14 on Pyramid Point at the southwest end of Long Island. Facilities at the site included a combined power plant and searchlight shelter, a Distant Electric Control, or DEC, station and wooden storage and support buildings.
Searchlight #14 exhibits the remains of a wooden structure built onto the front of the shelter. Inspection of other sites and some post-war photographs suggest that similar structures were installed at many searchlight sites in Kodiak. Interestingly, veteran accounts indicate that the wooden additions were not present during WW II. It is possible that these structures were built after the war to protect and weatherproof the shelters. |
